From Scholarship Recipient to Firefighter: Celebrating Weston Mungillo
Scholarship Alumni Update: Earlier this year, the SWFL Heroes Foundation had the honor of awarding Weston Mungillo a scholarship as he worked toward becoming a firefighter. In the months since, Weston has reached one milestone after another—and this week, he responded to his first fire.
It is a moment that represents far more than one completed call.
Behind that moment were months of training, long days of preparation and the determination required to complete high school, the Fire Academy and EMT school within an extraordinarily short period of time. Each achievement moved Weston closer to being ready for the moment when someone would need help and he would be one of the people called to respond.
For the SWFL Heroes Foundation, seeing a scholarship recipient reach a milestone like this is incredibly meaningful. A scholarship may provide support at one point in a young person’s journey, but the work that follows belongs to the recipient. Weston took that opportunity and continued moving forward, accomplishing more in four months than many people accomplish in several years.
His mother, Jennifer Summerlin, recently shared her thoughts as her son respond to his first fire. Her words capture the profound mix of pride, fear and love that comes with watching your child become the person who runs toward danger when others need help
Jennifer wrote:
Four months. That’s it!
In the last four months, Weston has graduated high school, the Fire Academy, and EMT school. And yesterday, he responded to his first fire. ❤️🔥
I don’t even know if there are words big enough for how proud I am of him.
As his mom, there’s a part of me that will probably always see the little boy I raised. But now I get to watch that little boy grow into a man who is willing to run toward the things the rest of us instinctively run away from.
I know this career isn’t an easy one. I know there will be long shifts, difficult calls, things he can’t unsee, and moments when I’ll know he’s somewhere dangerous and all I can do is wait for him to come home.
But there’s something incredibly humbling about knowing that my son is going to be the hero in so many other people’s stories.
On someone’s worst day, when their home is burning, when someone they love is hurt, when they’re scared and don’t know what to do—Weston may be one of the people who shows up.
What a privilege it has been to raise a son who chose a life of service. And what a strange mix of pride and fear it is to watch him step into it.
Weston, I am so unbelievably proud of everything you have accomplished in such a short amount of time. But even more than the certificates, graduations, uniforms, and titles, I’m proud of the man you’ve become.
Be brave. Be smart. Take care of the people beside you. And please, always come home. ❤️

The Family Behind Every First Responder
Jennifer’s words offer a perspective that is easy to overlook.
When a firefighter responds to an emergency, that call also affects the people waiting at home. Families live with the knowledge that someone they love may be entering a dangerous and unpredictable situation. They celebrate the achievements, encourage the training and feel tremendous pride—but that pride often exists alongside a fear that cannot simply be switched off.
For a mother, the uniform does not replace the child she raised. The firefighter who arrives when someone else is experiencing the worst moment of their life is still her son—the person she worries about, prays for and waits to see come safely through the door.
That is what gives Jennifer’s message such weight. Her words recognize Weston’s courage without ignoring the realities of the work. They honor the man he is becoming while holding close the little boy she will always remember.
They also remind us that first responders do not serve alone. Their families carry part of that responsibility with them through every long shift, difficult call and uncertain moment.
The Purpose Behind a Scholarship
The SWFL Heroes Foundation provides scholarships because we believe in encouraging young people who are willing to work toward meaningful goals and contribute to their communities.
The scholarship is only one part of the story. The recipient must complete the classes, meet the standards, endure the demanding training and continue showing up. Weston has done exactly that.
Graduating from high school is an important achievement on its own. Completing the Fire Academy and EMT school requires additional discipline, focus and commitment. Responding to his first fire marked the point when that preparation became real service to another person.
We are proud that the SWFL Heroes Foundation was able to support Weston during this chapter of his journey. His progress demonstrates why these scholarships matter. They are not simply awards presented during an event and then forgotten. They become part of real lives, real careers and real stories that continue unfolding throughout Southwest Florida.
