First Responder Scholarship FAQ
Who is eligible to apply for the SWFL Heroes Foundation scholarship?
Applicants must be entering into a first responder related field (firefighter, EMT, law enforcement). Applicants must currently reside in and plan to attend training in Southwest Florida. Only non-sponsored future first responders are eligible.
Do I have to be pursuing a career as a first responder to qualify?
Yes — the scholarship is specifically for individuals pursuing training or a career as a first responder (law enforcement, firefighter, EMT). The Foundation’s mission is to support aspiring first responders from Southwest Florida.
Yes. Our scholarship program is designed specifically for individuals who live in Southwest Florida and plan to complete their first responder training within the region. Supporting local students helps strengthen the future of public safety in our own communities.
What fields of study are accepted for this scholarship?
Eligible programs include any field of study that leads to a career as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or EMT. This includes police academy programs, fire academy training, EMT certification, and related first responder education offered through accredited schools or training centers.
Yes. Applicants must provide either a current high school transcript or a letter of acceptance into the academy, college, or training program they plan to attend. This verification is required before scholarship funds can be awarded.
Is financial need a requirement for eligibility?
No. Financial need is not a requirement. Scholarships are awarded based on eligibility criteria such as Southwest Florida residency, commitment to a first responder career path, and being a non-sponsored applicant.
What documents do I need to include with my application?
A complete application includes:
• A personal essay explaining your motivation to serve as a first responder
• A high school transcript or letter of acceptance for the program you plan to attend
Additional materials may be requested during the review process if needed.
Is there an age limit for applicants?
Applicants of all ages may apply, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and are pursuing first responder training in Southwest Florida.
The SWFL Heroes Founation has awarded past scholarships to individuals of all ages and stages of their education and career journey.
How many scholarships are awarded each year?
There is no fixed number of awards per year. Scholarships are granted based on available funds and submitted applications. SWFL Heroes Foundation awards scholarships “as we have the ability,” which means the number may vary depending on donations and applicant demand.
What is the scholarship amount?
There is no preset scholarship amount. Applicants are asked to indicate the cost of their class or academy and the amount requested when applying. Awards are made based on the verification of that request and what the Foundation can support — so the grant amount varies per applicant.
